“The Truth About the Buddha’s 4 Noble Truths”
5-Week Class, Sept. 25, Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23. 7-9 PM
Teacher: Carla Brennan
The Satellite, 6265 Highway 9, Felton, CA 95018
EMAIL REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED: Space is limited. You are expected to attend at least 4 of the 5 sessions. (This is not a drop-in group.) Email Betsy Blessing at: firstname.lastname@example.org. Please put “4 Noble Truths” in subject line.
The Four Noble Truths are the foundation of all the Buddha’s teachings. Legend says that they were the first guidance given after the Buddha awakened under the bodhi tree. However, the word “truth” may be misleading. These aren’t “truths” that you must believe in but rather they are a four-step framework explaining our shared human predicament. They describe a basic process for freeing ourselves from struggle, aggression and confusion. All of the many Buddhist teachings, all of the thousands of volumes written on Buddhism, all the meditative practices we engage in, lead back to illuminate one or more of the Four Noble Truths.
The Four Noble Truths are often compared to a physician’s diagnosis and treatment:
1. You identify the illness. Human suffering.
2. You find the cause. Habits of misunderstanding and conditioned reactivity.
3. You determine a cure. These habits can be undone.
4. You offer a prescription. The Eight-Fold Noble Path.
We will explore each of the “truths” and discover how they can guide us in our everyday life. Having a deep understanding of this framework can help you skillfully apply all the teachings and practices you learn. Then our confusion begins to unravel and reveal the innate wisdom of our original nature and the true freedom of our heart.
Each class will include instructions, meditation sessions, group discussion, Q & A. You will receive guided audio and readings weekly and be encouraged to meditate daily. This class is for both experienced and new students. Join us for the opportunity to practice together and to share our personal journey.
This is offered on a donation (dana) basis. No fee is charged. We have a suggested sliding scale of $60 – $200. However, more or less is gratefully accepted. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. Non-monetary donations are also accepted. Donations are tax-deductible.
